What's in a Money Making Domain Name?

As I reviewed my notes for this post I was comfortable knowing that if you had followed the suggested search parameters for your “theme keywords” and “tags” then you should have a good understanding of your niche.  So, here I was ready to post on setting up your website when I realized  we hadn’t registered your domain name, nor had we discussed the impact the name has on your search engine optimization (SEO).

It was time to revise the outline and take a look at selecting the domain with your theme keyword in mind.  First, internet marketing for stay at home jobs will consist of generating free traffic and maximizing SEO.  I realize you may not understand some of these aspects yet, but let’s just imagine for a moment you already have a good handle on them and we’ll jump start to your theme or niche.

When you were searching for your niche, you narrowed down your market from huge to small.  For example, you start with musical instruments, next you search for wind instruments, then flutes, then recorders.  Now you have a micro niche (the smaller segment of a larger category) – recorders.

However, maybe you decide you don’t want to sell recorders, but you like the music. So, is there a market for the sheet music for recorders?   Let’s use the search tools we previously learned to test for the theme keywords “Recorder Sheet Music”.   First, we ran a market analysis and found a low competition of 22,900.  Next, we used Google Adwords Keyword tools to search for “broad” matches which showed 9,900 searches per month (330/day) and “phrase” matches of 5,400/month (180/day).  These are excellent parameters showing great potential with definite ways to make money!  Next, to add to the success of this particular market search, we found there are 9 paid Adwords (listed on the far right hand column on the Google search pages – these tell you someone is willing to pay for this market segment) on the first 10 pages of Google.  Therefore, this appears to be a fantastic niche market!  Remember, a good keyword phrase has at least 80 general searches a day (this one has 180 specific searches – outstanding), with competition of less than 50,000 – this search shows only 22,900 competition.  This search and theme keyword is a great opportunity for someone who loves music and recorders.

For this example, and to maximize your marketability, we would pick your domain name based only on the theme keywords you’ve chosen.  Your theme keywords,  “recorder sheet music” should definitely be in the domain name, as this will enhance your SEO and page ranking as you market.  Basically, having your exact keywords in your domain name increases your likelihood of free traffic and higher ranking opportunities.

As you search for a domain name, stay as close as you can to the keywords for your niche, again, this will help optimize your site.  In this example, I found “recordersheetmusic.com” was not available, but “recordersheetmusic.net” was available.  So, for this market I would pick the .net name and start my web hosting with that as my main “theme” page.   Understanding the extensions are important for free traffic, as this can help with your rankings – if the .com, .net, and .org are all taken, I would next focus on adding a suffix to the theme keywords, just like I did on this site.  The .com, .net and .org were taken so I added “blog” to my keywords.  In this particular instance, adding “blog” to my theme keyword was actually an added bonus for my domain.  Since Google has a higher love for blogs, if you are going to blog, this can increase your traffic and maximize your ways to make money online.

There’s one more point I’d like to make about domain names – don’t worry about not having a perfect sounding name, because searches are not done by “sounds”.  Many new marketers think they need a cool sounding name or a catchy slogan name, like ToysRus.  The fact is searches are about how people search and type, which generates traffic and can increase your ways to make money.  Think about how you search for products or services online – that’s what you’re looking to capture for your niche. You can always add pages and cool domains as your business grows.  But in the beginning, you want to a have a domain that fits your niche market, searches and parameters – that’s your golden nugget.

One last thought here, as you start to look for your hosting and domain registrar for your work from home business, be careful and look at all of the services the company offers.  As for me, I do my searches, buy my domains, websites and my hosting at Blue Host; in my opinion, they are the best hosting company – both service and tech support – period.

Until next time . . . .

Be well.
