Wishing you and yours a happy and prosperous new year.
Now it’s time we looked at some of the mechanics for getting started on the internet and to get your stay at home jobs up and running. My goal is by the end of this post you’ll have the basic tools you need to actually start an online career.
By now you should have determined your interests, found your niche, narrowed it down to your micro niche and researched the best keywords and theme. Our domain search and registration should certainly have you ready to make a successful online business. So where do you do from here?
Let’s start with getting your hosting service. There are many web hosting companies, and I have tried quite a few, but for me there is only one choice, Blue Host. I like to consider Blue Host as my one stop shop since you can get your domain name, hosting and great support all from Blue Host. I have over 60 domains and a half dozen hosting packages and in my opinion they are the best! I suggest, if you haven’t picked your domain name yet, like we discussed earlier, this is where you want to register it. Remember, domains are based on the Theme Keyword you’ve chosen. Stay as close as you can to the keyword for your niche, as this will help in optimizing your site, and maximize the best ways to make money online. For example, in my video test I chose Potty Training Tips as the theme keyword – so I picked the domain name www.PottyTrainingTips.com. But if the exact match is not available try .net or .org.
Next, for your online services, I suggest keeping both your domain name and hosting with the same company. I realize some people go for the lowest priced domain sites and then transfer or forward the domain to their hosting company, but I disagree. Yes, you may save $2 or $3 bucks, but what you gain in control and support will certainly out weigh those couple of dollars – a thousand times over. Start with a basic unlimited hosting service, since you can always add more domains as you increase your niches. Here again, I’ll recommend Blue Host, there is no better support staff for hosting and help. They are totally awesome in their service and knowledge – and folks, they are located in San Antonio TX with 24 hour real live support. This gives you plenty of options since your work from home jobs may not fit the typical 9 to 5 schedule some companies offer.
Ok, you now have a domain and a hosting service, so let’s get you a website. Again, there are many options and many ways to make money. If you can understand some html or have the patience to learn (there are many free videos and tutorials online for WordPress), then I say go with WordPress. It’s free and you have thousands of pages to choose from, but there are many limitations to how you can customize your site and publish products. I have many Wordpress sites, but I prefer 90 SecondWebsiteBuilder. It’s a very inexpensive program and the features and simplicity of it are fantastic! You’re only limited by your imagination. I love to play with this program!
So, as you start to build your site, remember to keep your audience in mind – what are they looking for, what interests them, how can you make a contribution to their needs, what benefits can you offer them. If you structure your site to fill THEIR needs, what they are looking to buy, then you will be successful with your work from home business.
The last piece of this puzzle – how to choose your products. I could write about this subject for days, until your eyes get fuzzy and bloodshot. But my best advice is to pick the products you feel most comfortable recommending or think about what products you would buy. There are untold thousands of products you can offer online. Once you decide on the type of products, physical or digital, then just start working them into your business. If you want to get started right now, I would suggest looking around this site, you can find several quality products that would be a good starting point. Another option is to find a solid affiliate program, so you can earn as you learn.
Next time, we’ll look at the overall construction of your website and how it will interact and affect your marketing. Now you’re ready to start your website and as always . . . . . . .

As I reviewed my notes for this post I was comfortable knowing that if you had followed the suggested search parameters for your “theme keywords” and “tags” then you should have a good understanding of your niche. So, here I was ready to post on setting up your website when I realized we hadn’t registered your domain name, nor had we discussed the impact the name has on your search engine optimization (SEO).
It was time to revise the outline and take a look at selecting the domain with your theme keyword in mind. First, internet marketing for stay at home jobs will consist of generating free traffic and maximizing SEO. I realize you may not understand some of these aspects yet, but let’s just imagine for a moment you already have a good handle on them and we’ll jump start to your theme or niche.
When you were searching for your niche, you narrowed down your market from huge to small. For example, you start with musical instruments, next you search for wind instruments, then flutes, then recorders. Now you have a micro niche (the smaller segment of a larger category) – recorders.
However, maybe you decide you don’t want to sell recorders, but you like the music. So, is there a market for the sheet music for recorders? Let’s use the search tools we previously learned to test for the theme keywords “Recorder Sheet Music”. First, we ran a market analysis and found a low competition of 22,900. Next, we used Google Adwords Keyword tools to search for “broad” matches which showed 9,900 searches per month (330/day) and “phrase” matches of 5,400/month (180/day). These are excellent parameters showing great potential with definite ways to make money! Next, to add to the success of this particular market search, we found there are 9 paid Adwords (listed on the far right hand column on the Google search pages – these tell you someone is willing to pay for this market segment) on the first 10 pages of Google. Therefore, this appears to be a fantastic niche market! Remember, a good keyword phrase has at least 80 general searches a day (this one has 180 specific searches – outstanding), with competition of less than 50,000 – this search shows only 22,900 competition. This search and theme keyword is a great opportunity for someone who loves music and recorders.
For this example, and to maximize your marketability, we would pick your domain name based only on the theme keywords you’ve chosen. Your theme keywords, “recorder sheet music” should definitely be in the domain name, as this will enhance your SEO and page ranking as you market. Basically, having your exact keywords in your domain name increases your likelihood of free traffic and higher ranking opportunities.
As you search for a domain name, stay as close as you can to the keywords for your niche, again, this will help optimize your site. In this example, I found “recordersheetmusic.com” was not available, but “recordersheetmusic.net” was available. So, for this market I would pick the .net name and start my web hosting with that as my main “theme” page. Understanding the extensions are important for free traffic, as this can help with your rankings – if the .com, .net, and .org are all taken, I would next focus on adding a suffix to the theme keywords, just like I did on this site. The .com, .net and .org were taken so I added “blog” to my keywords. In this particular instance, adding “blog” to my theme keyword was actually an added bonus for my domain. Since Google has a higher love for blogs, if you are going to blog, this can increase your traffic and maximize your ways to make money online.
There’s one more point I’d like to make about domain names – don’t worry about not having a perfect sounding name, because searches are not done by “sounds”. Many new marketers think they need a cool sounding name or a catchy slogan name, like ToysRus. The fact is searches are about how people search and type, which generates traffic and can increase your ways to make money. Think about how you search for products or services online – that’s what you’re looking to capture for your niche. You can always add pages and cool domains as your business grows. But in the beginning, you want to a have a domain that fits your niche market, searches and parameters – that’s your golden nugget.
One last thought here, as you start to look for your hosting and domain registrar for your work from home business, be careful and look at all of the services the company offers. As for me, I do my searches, buy my domains, websites and my hosting at Blue Host; in my opinion, they are the best hosting company – both service and tech support – period.
Until next time . . . .

It’s time to start setting up your actual online business so you can work from home. I’ll be posting several articles this week to help you find the right tools and avenues to market your business. However, before we start with the actual how and where, we need to look at the what – what is. You’ll need some basic definitions in order to understand your specific market and choosing the domain name for your business. Things like; what is a Theme Keyword, Broad and Phrase searches, micro niche, etc. These are all terms you need to have a better understanding of before setting up your online business.
First, we need to look at your competition and how it will impact your choice of domains. You can search for this in Google. When you search in an open box the answer Google returns will be all competitors that mention your keywords, but if you search in a specific phrase – you use “ “ around your search words, then the results will only be those in specific order and connection to “your keyword” – this gives you your direct competitors. When searching for these words, you want to narrow them down – reduce the competition, find a “micro” niche, as it offers easier ways to make money and costs less than playing with the big boys. A “micro niche” is a word grouping with less than 50,000 competitors. Try searching Google on a set of words both with “ “ and without the quote marks – you’ll see the difference can sometimes be huge. Remember, for the best opportunities keep your competitors to less than 50,000 and certainly do not go over 100,000 unless you have some solid background on internet marketing.
Next, let’s look at some basic definitions and examples. Searches can lead to money – so you want to maximize everything to get as many searches each day. Adwords are the words businesses are willing to pay for to generate traffic to their sites and hopefully have their visitor buy something. You’ll use these Adwords to find and develop your own online market. I suggest using Google Adwords Keyword Tools. There are many paid programs available, but Google is free, easy to use and the data is very reliable. You will want to search your words under both Broad and Phrase – Broad, which includes all pieces and parts of your words within a group of words – and Phrase, which are the EXACT words in a search. Broad gives you the overall market available from those words. Phrase narrows it to just the “specific” words. Here’s an example: your words are “Pashmina Scarves” – broad searches: “Susan’s scarf was made from pashmina wool” – phrase search: “Susan’s store carries “pashmina scarves”. See how “phrase” is more specific – phrase should be your target market for your product’s traffic, but you can get overflow from the broad searches as well, which is a good thing.
Once you have your primary set of words this will be your Theme Keyword – the focus of your site and business. A micro niche example might be ladies accessories, to ladies headwear, to scarves, to pashmina scarves – this would be a micro niche – “pashmina scarves”. Another example might be hiking, to survival equipment, to survival first aid, to “snake bite kits for hikers”. These would be the keywords you base all of your research on to make sure the numbers are right for a micro niche with good traffic volume, which should be no less than 100 searches per day. For instance, broad “pashmina scarves” is 8,100/month and phrase is 4,400/month. These numbers would show you good phrase traffic with an excellent broad overflow available.
Now that you have some basic tools and definitions, get ready to search for your domain and focus on kicking off your stay at home jobs business. As always . . . . .

By now you’re a bit confused and frustrated trying to find what kind of stay at home jobs are available or how to get started. If you followed the first part of this post you have a good handle on what your strengths and weaknesses are and how they can affect your business. Now it’s time to look at what type of a person you are, as this can impact the type of business you choose.
First, ask yourself about your personality traits. Are you an introvert or an extravert? Are you a people person, do you like to talk? How about children, do you enjoy working with them? Do you like solitude or a social environment? Or maybe you prefer reading to writing?
Next, let’s examine your passions and what excites or drives you. Are you an animal lover, or a passionate gardner? Maybe you’re a foodie or aspiring chef who loves to experiment. Do you have a favorite charity? These are some of the blocks you can use to build your stay at home jobs model. For instance, I’m a people person, who loves reading and writing and a diehard foodie that loves to travel. But I also enjoy my real estate and financial background.
When I was first assessing my work from home market I incorporated the most marketable aspects into my web businesses. I prioritized and started with the ones I thought would give me the most financial success, because we have to secure and stabilize our income first. Therefore, we have to maximize our ways to make money. Once we have secured our basic needs, then we can start to expand and explore our other interests.
The last point we should cover before you start searching for your market or an affiliate to join is your schedule. What time do you have to commit to your online job or home business? Is this going to be an all out grand slam or do you have children at home and can only work between naps and after bedtime? You need to be practical and truthful with yourself as to what you can do. Remember, you don’t want to trade one headache job for another. Working from home is a great joy, as long as we don’t lose sight of the commitment we’ve made. So, make a schedule and stick to it, don’t wonder from the path . . . . don’t lose your dreams.
Well, my schedule’s done for the day. It’s time to go finish my current Clive Cussler novel. My next post will cover how to look for the best prospects and evaluate the real deals out there. The internet is a treasure trove of options and opportunities just waiting for you to explore.
Dare to Be Free!
So you’ve decided to be a stay at home jobs person – great! In today’s economy and financial environment we should all be more focused on how to take care of ourselves because the big boys sure aren’t looking out for us. In these tough times and ever increasing job loss, it’s time to make your own future. There are many legitimate opportunities and ways to make money on the internet, which allows you to work from home. This is your best defense – for you and your family.
Now you’re thinking where do I start, how do I know what to do and what will work? Well, let’s look at what you need first. My suggestion is to understand yourself and situation before you start looking for your market. One good way to do this is to assess your strengths and weaknesses, make a pros and cons list. Now apply it to working a job. Are you a self starter, a procrastinator, motivated, independent, organized, or disciplined? Knowing this information will help you decide on what areas of interest will give you the best opportunity for success.
To work from home you will need to make sure you have the ability to stay focused, be self motivated, a good time manager and committed to your goals. These are qualities that will serve you well in a home based business. When we work from home, we don’t have someone looking over our shoulder or cracking a whip. We are the ones that must keep us focused and driven and willing to overcome the daily challenges.
I have successfully worked from home since 2000 and I can’t imagine doing anything else and still having the same level of satisfaction and security. It’s given me the time, freedom, finances and family life that most people only get to dream about. I take vacations when I want, have a day off when I feel like it or curl up with a good book on a rainy day (even if it’s a working afternoon) or anything else, because of stay at home jobs.
I’d like to leave you with some thoughts to consider as you’re searching for what to do. First, find what interests you, what drives you, what you enjoy the most, then search for those areas to market. Working from home has many great opportunities to follow your passions and dreams. As you look for your niche and where to start your business, think outside the box, it really does work . . . let your imagination flow, follow your heart . . . it won’t steer you wrong.
